Upcoming crime drama Roofman will see Channing Tatum in all his glory as the actor returns on screen with a thrilling biographical project where he will be portraying the notorious spree-robber Jeffrey Allen Manchester.

Helmed by Derek Cianfrance, the upcoming film made an appearance during Paramount Pictures' presentation at this year's CinemaCon. Making a surprising appearance, Tatum went on stage to open up about the project and why it's a special film for him. The 'Magic Mike' actor told the audience,

“I know everybody’s come and out and said they have something special to show you. They lied. I am the one who has something special to show you. That movie is Roofman, it is a really, really special movie.”

He then went on to share a few words about Cianfrance, as he added,

“He’s crafted this movie that is an immensely entertaining ride, equal parts devastating, emotional and somehow hilarious.”

Cianfrance, best known for directing Blue Valentine and contributing to the soundtrack of Sound of Metal, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, will helm Roofman as his fifth directorial venture.

As for Tatum, he was featured in three well-received films, namely, Fly Me to the Moon where he played the role of Cole Davis; Deadpool & Wolverine where he played the role of Remy LeBeau aka Gambit; and Blink Twice where he played the role of Slater King. Besides Roofman, he is rumored to be working on Beth de Araújo's Josephine, another crime action drama. He will also be a part of the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday in 2026.

Who is Roofman based on?

Roofman is based on the story of Jeffrey Allen Manchester, who went by the alias John Zorn and was infamous for breaking into places he robbed through the roof, which he drilled and then entered from.

Known for robbing multiple McDonald's locations and for escaping and hiding inside a Toys R Us store, the former United States Army Reserve officer is currently serving four decades in prison with only one decade left.

Despite his crimes, he was known for his unusual kindness and his non-violent nature, even in moments of action. He is known to have once offered one of his victims a coat while he asked the staff to walk inside a freezer. This moment is recreated in the film, as seen in the clips shown at CinemaCon, where Tatum portrays the scene.

Roofman will also feature Kirsten Dunst, Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, and Jimmy O. Yang alongside Channing Tatum. The film is being produced by Jonathan Glickman, Thom Zadra, Charles M. Barsamian, Jonathan Montepare, Chris Parker, and Tyler Zacharia.

Roofman is set to release on October 3, 2025.
