Meet Joe Black is that unforgettable 1998 film where Death, played by Brad Pitt, takes human form and crashes the life of a wealthy media mogul, Bill Parrish played by Anthony Hopkins. It’s a slow-burning, emotional ride about life, love, and the inevitable fate we all share. Mixing romance with deep questions about mortality, the film asks what happens when the impossible happens the everyday, and how love can change even the most unchangeable things.
The ending? It’s a bittersweet blend of hope and heartbreak, where Death learns what it means to feel love and let go. But what really happens in those final moments? Why does Death choose to walk away, and what happens to the mortal he loved on earth? Here’s everything you need to know.
What is Meet Joe Black about?

Meet Joe Black combines quite a few genres together as it tells the story of Death, as the Grim Reaper enters the body of a young man to explore life on the human level. Death wishes to experience and to learn the depth of human emotions.
He shows up at the doorstep of Bill Parrish, a rich media tycoon breathing his last breaths. Instead of simply taking Parrish, Death - now calling himself Joe Black - offers a bargain. After some back and forth, Joe agrees to grant Bill some extra time on Earth if he promises to guide him through all the complicated parts of being human.
Soon, things become more complicated when Joe meets Bill's daughter Susan in a coffee shop. His curiosity increases as he falls in love with a mortal- something that even he did not see coming. Meanwhile, Bill acknowledges his own impending end before seeking peace. He also wants to make sure life for his family continues on after him, and that they are prepared for it emotionally.
On a fundamental level, Meet Joe Black is less about the supernatural and more about the messy beautiful human experience we all navigate. Ultimately, it is a story about learning how to let go, of fear, control, and the people we love the most. It portrays sadness in a more realistic, yet beautiful way.
What happens when Death falls in love with Susan?

During their time together, Joe begins to experience emotions. Someone who was initially detached from the world begins to feel affection for Susan which leads to an unexpected romance as Susan is drawn to his enigmatic personality.
But as Joe’s time in the human world runs out, things take a darker turn. Deeply enamored, he begins to consider something unthinkable: taking Susan with him to the afterlife. In his own way, he believes it might be a gift, an eternal bond beyond time. But to her father , this was nothing short of a betrayal. Furious and heartbroken, he confronts Joe and forces him to see what he’s truly doing: robbing Susan of the life she deserves.
Bill's insistence, and his protectiveness for Susan makes Joe rethink his decision. Eventually after deep consideration and being persuaded by , he decides against taking Susan with him. He recognizes the importance of allowing Susan to live a happy and meaningful life and that taking away the prospects of a good future is not the best decision for her. In one of the film’s most powerful turning points, Joe listens. He chooses to let Susan go, accepting that loving her means allowing her to live, to grow, to find joy in the mortal world, even if it’s without him.
By the end, Joe gives up the borrowed body he was inhabiting, and Susan is left with a chance at a new beginning. Susan gets to have a life with the same face she fell for in the coffee shop, but not the same soul. Their story ends not in forever, but in freedom.
What happens to Bill?

At the end of Meet Joe Black, Bill Parrish meets his death with dignity and grace. Throughout the movie, Bill became more aware of the short time he had left. Though not shocked, he was somewhat put off, but chose to make the most out of the balance of his time to finish up loose ends, say goodbye to his legacy and try to prepare both him and his family to say goodbye.
On the night of his 65th Birthday party he says emotional goodbyes to all the people he loved, with perhaps the most emotional one being with his daughter Susan. Bill endowed Susan with a few pearls of wisdom, and made sure that Susan knew how much he loved her and that she should fully embrace life and be free in it. Eventually, Joe, who had considered taking Susan with him to the afterlife, reassumes his role of escorting Bill to the other side.
As Bill walks with Joe on the hill in the distance with fireworks exploding they simply take their last steps and disappear into the night. Bill leaves with dignity, with calmness. He is reflective of a man that lived with honor, he faced the circumstances of death bravely, and he left this world on his own terms, with peace in his heart.
Does Susan get back with the coffee shop guy?

This part of the film is left with a more ambiguous note. Although Susan too had fallen in love with Joe Black, his real identity is not known to us, except for his physical appearance- as his body was being inhibited by Death. Apart from that, nothing is known about the mystery man and Joe (Death) wipes off all the memories of these days from the man's head and allows him to live a new, fresh life.
However, Susan does remember him and the film leaves the audience with an open ending in regards to Susan's future with him. There's hope for a new, fresh beginning, with the real man behind the face she loves.
Meet Joe Black is available to watch on Netflix and Prime Video.
