"I didn't think they'd bring me back": Julie Bowen thought she'd be replaced for 'Happy Gilmore 2'

Julie Bowen is reprising her role in Happy Gilmore 2, a sequel to the comedy classic Happy Gilmore, which is set to release on July 25 on Netflix.

The actress opened up about thinking she might be replaced for the sequel in a recent appearance on the "Inside of You" podcast on July 1. The Modern Family actress also elaborated on her role alongside Adam Sandler in the movie.

Bowen noted,

“I didn’t think they’d bring me back at all. I mean, who am I supposed to be? He’s got to have a younger woman in this one, ‘Happy Gilmore 2.'”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bowen revealed that she heard a rumor from one of her teenage children that actress Sydney Sweeney may play Sandler's love interest. She noted,

“I went, I’m hurt and I so respect that move. Of course, why wouldn’t you?”

Julie Bowen revealed that she thought she wouldn't be the first choice, thirty years after the original movie was released. She expressed her surprise when she received the call for Happy Gilmore 2 and noted,

“So when I got the call that I was actually in it, I was like, ‘Are you sure? Come on.’”

She also spoke about the role during her appearance on the Fly On The Wall podcast. They discussed how Julie Bowen's son said that Sydney Sweeney may be the new "cart girl" and she may be cast as the "ex-wife." Apart from Bowen, other actors reprising their original roles are Ben Stiller and Christopher McDonald.

According to Variety, the actress revealed she has less screen time than she did in the original movie. However, she revealed co-star Adam Sandler's words to her and said,

“Adam’s like, ‘Stop saying that. You’re the heart of the movie.'”
