All we need to know about Amy Poehler’s boyfriend Joel Lovell
Joel Lovell is a prominent journalist and editor known for his contributions to major media organizations. He was raised in New York and studied at Cornell University. Initially, he planned to attend medical school, but he developed a passion for literature and storytelling.
After reading and writing a lot of fiction, Lovell earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan. He then began teaching undergraduate fiction writing at the same institution.

In an interview with the University of Michigan’s alumni newsletter in 2016, Joel Lovell explained how he luckily got a job at Harper’s Magazine when his friend decided not to take it. He said that one day he received a call from the magazine’s editor, asking if he would be interested in applying for an editing position:
“I kind of lucked into a magazine job at Harper’s. My friend had applied for a job at the magazine but decided not to take it, so he recommended me. I literally just got a call one day from an editor asking if I’d be interested in applying for an editing job. That was 20 years ago.”
He was then hired by Hugo Lindgren, the editor of The New York Times Magazine, in December 2010, where he worked for four years. Joel Lovell then began working at GQ, where he wrote a popular 2015 cover story on Stephen Colbert as the comedian transitioned from comedy to late-night hosting.
He then served as an executive editor for This American Life, sharing anecdotes about odd jobs, insomnia, and college life. In his university’s newsletter, he said:
“When I started at This American Life, I thought the editing process would be similar, just listening to it rather than reading. I was so totally wrong.”
Lovell joined the innovative podcast studio Pineapple Media in 2017, where he currently works as an executive editor.
He kept his personal life private until his relationship with Amy Poehler came into the spotlight. While he has three children from his previous marriage, Poehler has two children from her marriage to actor Will Arnett. She was also previously linked to comedians Nick Kroll, John Stamos, and Benjamin Graf.
