Deadpool & Wolverine has recently proved to be another blockbuster for the MCU tentpole. With the on-screen camaraderie between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reaching several crescendos on Deadpool & Wolverine, it might be difficult to imagine that the iconic finale of the film was initially thought to be executed any differently than it eventually was.
However, following the success of Deadpool & Wolverine throughout its theatrical release and its addition to Disney+, a bonus director's commentary is currently making rounds.
In the commentary, director Shawn Levy revealed how the ending for the film was already in the can when he decided to respond to a note by actress and Ryan Reynold's wife, Blake Lively and subsequently ended up reshooting for thirty-six hours.
By the end of it, a revised ending saw Deadpool and Wolverine apparently missing after sacrificing themselves to foil Cassandra Nova's plans and defeat Paradox.
But following an impassioned speech by Paradox, both Marvel heroes make a stunning comeback to stop his short. All of this takes place while the song 'Iris' by Goo Goo Dolls plays in the background.

Why was the original ending for Deadpool & Wolverine changed?
According to the Deadpool & Wolverine commentary, the original ending for the film, as planned by director Shawn Levy, consisted of the two heroes blowing up the power room and resurfacing from the destruction caused by the Time Ripper almost immediately. This treatment lacked any element of suspense.
Although it was expected that both Deadpool and Wolverine would make it to the film's happy ending, an element of suspense was thought to be missing that might optimize the audience experience. Interestingly, the one who pointed out this lapse was not the director or the producer but Blake Lively herself.
Blake Lively appeared briefly during the film and lent her voice to the character of Ladypool. Regardless, Blake's strong storytelling skills stepped in at the right time, as she had been associated with the film since the beginning. According to Levy, Blake sent him a note after going through the original ending. The note read:
"You know, I’ve been with you this whole movie. I want to sit in the fear that they’re lost. Let me be in that place of suspense so the triumph of their survival is more emotional and visceral."
Levy also added in the commentary:
"And credit where credit is due. It used to be that there was no suspense, that the power room blew up, and our heroes had survived. That was a Blake note and it really opened up a new way of thinking about this part of the movie and it’s why we did this reshoot… and, here, the payoff is so much more satisfying."
Ryan Reynolds, too, commented:
"We did just a day-and-a-half of reshoots on the movie, which we’re very proud of. These kinds of movies typically involve weeks of reshoots. But this speech that Matthew (Macfadyen) has is one of the pieces that we reshot. And he is miraculous."

The film has successfully fixed the ebbing tide for Marvel Studios. It is still generating profits as it continues streaming on Disney+ and has already amassed 19.4 million views in just six days after it premiered on the streaming platform.
