Popular Senegalese-American singer Akon has finally responded to the divorce filing by his estranged partner, Tomeka Thiam. People magazine revealed in a Monday, November 17, publication that it has obtained Akon’s court documents, and the singer is requesting joint legal and physical custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey.
In a 2022 interview with The Zeze Mills Show, the Lonely hitmaker talked about raising his nine children.
“My job ain't to be doing all that extra stuff and these holidays and recitals. While I’m taking care of my responsibility to make sure the family has a roof over their head and food, if I have the time to do that and show love, yes, I will do that.”
He added:
“Communication allows me to be there every day. That’s what my FaceTime phone is for.”

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, Alon’s wife Tomeka Thiam filed for a divorce four days before their 29th wedding anniversary. In the filings obtained by People magazine, Thiam cited irreconcilable differences as the reason. She listed their date of separation as 'TBA' and confirmed they only had one child, their 17-year-old daughter, Journey.
Tomeka requested joint legal custody of their daughter, requesting that be given physical custody and Akon visitation rights.
Akon is a staunch believer in polygamy. He revealed in 2022 that he had been practising it.
“Polygamy is part of our culture. Absolutely. For me, it looks normal, because it’s culture for us. We didn’t go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world. See, the flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account.”
In 2023, musician Amirror admitted to being one of the singer’s four wives. She said:
“We all have different households, we all have different lifestyles. We don’t have to see each other so we don’t have to be cool with each other… Akon is the type of man [where] it’s not manipulation, it’s just, if you f--- with it [or] you don’t. This is our culture… Every woman wants to be the only one, and it’s okay.”
