Final Destination: Bloodlines is the latest chapter from the horror film series that has had a chokehold over its fans for over two decades. It started as a collection of gruesome situations where people die in the most unimaginable ways. Yet, despite following a certain formula in its splatter horror wheelhouse, it became a rather incisive look into the sheer inevitability of death.
Its characters have premonitions about their impending deaths, but no matter how much they try to run from it, death catches them in some shape or form. Since its inception in 2000, many things changed, but one remained consistent. It's the presence of Tony Todd as the funeral parlor owner William Bludworth. While tending to the needs of the dead, Bludworth often had words of wisdom to offer. With Todd's unfortunate death last year, his words in Final Destination: Bloodlines would certainly hold more weight than before.
While speaking with The Guardian, Final Destination: Bloodlines co-director Adam Stein revealed how Tony Todd's diagnosis changed his and the crew's approach to filming and affected their understanding of the film's subject matter on a meta-level.
“Everyone involved knew he was ill and we weren’t sure at certain points whether he would be able to participate. It was a really unique moment because talking about his own death for the movie on this meta-level, he’s speaking to the fans about his death."
Stein further added,
"And so at that moment when he had his final goodbye, we asked him if he would be able to kind of put the script away and do a take where he spoke from the heart about what death means and what life means … it’s his honest words of wisdom direct to you.”
Late Tony Todd says a final goodbye to the franchise with Final Destination: Bloodlines
The trailer for Final Destination: Bloodlines offers a glimpse into the calculated carnage that will ensue in the new iteration of this popular series. Until now, it has relied on similarly overcomplicated ways in which death followed its characters despite their best efforts to defy them. The new scene shows an entire family facing death due to an absurd chain of events that puts their lives at risk. All it takes is just a little push or a slight oversight, and death sets its trap for them.
That is hardly surprising for the franchise's fans who get pulled back into the world of these intense horror-thrillers. Rather than just the blood and gore, the franchise has also represented a never-ending anxiety of death that follows us everywhere. It puts all those worries in an elaborate chain of events that leads to one of the characters' deaths. That's why, even after four parts, it hasn't necessarily lost its appeal. However, Final Destination: Bloodlines is special for another reason.
While the absurdly devised gore-filled casualties were a part of the appeal, Final Destination: Bloodlines might feel a little more personal after the passing of horror film legend Tony Todd. His monologue in the upcoming film as a funeral parlor owner might just be the most humanistic moment in the series to date.
