Gears of War adaptation might just have found a helmer- here's all about the upcoming Netflix movie's latest developments

Helmer David Leitch is set to helm the upcoming Netflix movie adaptation of the video game Gears of War, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

In the year 2022, Netflix acquired the rights to adapt the game into a film in association with The Coalition Studio. Before, the project was in progress with New Line Cinema back in 2007. Primarily, Netflix intends to make its movie adaptation, and then develop it further into an animated series.

Regarded as being amongst the most successful games of Xbox 360, Gears of War came into existence since the year 2006. It follows the plot of how the Delta Squad, a squad to out to protect humanity from the forces of the Locust Horde, a group of reptilian creatures emerging from below the ground. The game falls in the third-person shooter subgenre.

As per reports at The Hollywood Reporter, director David Leitch is deliberating to direct the movie adaptation of Gears of War. The project is in association with Netflix and The Coalition Studio, which has developed the game.

As per the outlet, Jon Spaihts, who is known for his work in Doctor Strange (2016), the Dune film series (2021, 2024), etc, is penning the script of the forthcoming film. Along with helming the film, David Leitch will join The Coalition Studio in producing the film as well.

Leitch is collaborating with his wife and associate producer Kelly McCormick, from their production house 87North. However, Netflix has not provided any statement about the collaboration.

David Leitch is known for his directorial work in films including Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), Bullet Train (2022), and Fall Guy (2024). He had also joined Chad Stahelski in directing John Wick (2014). Leitch is currently in the process of helming his forthcoming film with Amazon MGM, How to Rob a Bank. It is a film on robbery starring Nicholas Hoult and Anna Sawai.

Previously, the Deadpool 2 director had an extensive career as a stunt performer, since 1997. David Leitch has also been instrumental in the new addition to the Oscars' award category, that is, for Best Stunt Design.

Some of his stuntwork includes in films such as Blade (1998), Fight Club (1999), Spy Game (2001), S.W.A.T. (2003), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), Van Helsing (2004), Constantine (2005), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005), V for Vendetta (2005), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), Angels & Demons (2009), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Tron: Legacy (2010), The Mechanic (2011), etc.

If David Leitch is confirmed to helm the film, it shall indeed be interesting to witness his vision in adapting Gears of War into a feature, due to the helmer's deep experience in action and stuntwork. Leitch has been exploring the genre of action and comedy in his films, so with this forthcoming project, we might get to witness more innovative explorations in action sequences.
