A crime comedy musical film, Emilia Pérez is a recently released film on Netflix. The film tells the story of a dangerous cartel kingpin who finds a lawyer to help her start a new life and transition to a woman.

Jacques Audiard serves as a writer and director of the film, which is inspired by an undeveloped character in Écoute, a novel authored by Boris Razon. When talking about the film's inspiration, Jacques Audiard stated,
"The idea came to me through a book called Écoute. Halfway through, there is a character who is a drug kingpin who wants to transtition to become a woman. The author, who is a friend of mine, did not develop this character. I asked for the right to expand the character myself."

The French film released on Netflix on November 13, 2024. Audiences in US, Canada, and UK can stream the film on Netflix. This release came after a limited theatrical release by Pathé.

Audiences see Rita, an underappreciated lawyer in Mexico who finds herself helping a Mexican cartel leader called Juan Del Monte/Manitas. Hoping to start a new life, Juan Del Monte enlists the help of Rita to fake their death and secretly have a gender affirming surgery.
Juan Del Monte, after ungergoing the surgery starts a new chapter of her life as Emilia Pérez. In the film, audiences can expect to see a musical story about love and loss. When talking about the film, cast member Karla Sofía Gascón stated,
"You have an action movie that's not an action movie, a drama that's not a drama, a comedy that's not a comedy."

At the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the female cast members, Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Selena Gomez all bagged the award for Best Actress.
