The 2024 dark comedy horror film Carved is based on the story of a group of teenagers who participate in a pumpkin carving competition in a re-enactment village on Halloween night.

The protagonist, Kira (played by Elizabeth Peyton Lee), is the village theatre troop's director and is supported by her younger brother and friends. The movie is set in Cedar Creek Village in the '90s, where a mysterious pumpkin is discovered by a resident and taken to a carving contest. It later turns vengeful, seeing the massacre going on with its fellow pumpkins, and starts killing people.

Kira enlists the help of her younger brother Trevor and her friends to control the situation. But the deadly creature turns out to be a tough antagonist. As the plot unravels, the teenagers look for ways to kill the sentient pumpkin, but a few of them unfortunately die at its hands. Finally, Kira manages to stop the evil creature with the help of her brother and boyfriend.

As seen in the movie Carved, Kira devises a plan to destroy the vengeful pumpkin. So, she takes help from her friend, Barbara (played by Carla Jimenez), the general manager of the village, Bill (DJ Qualls), and head of grounds, Kevin (Marc Sully). Kevin hides in a different building and distributes walkie-talkies to everyone to distract the pumpkin. Meanwhile, others try to get the keys to the truck. But amidst all these, a small mistake by Kevin invites trouble, and Kevin and Bill die.

Meanwhile, Kira tries to retrieve the keys the group had accidentally dropped. Unfortunately, Shane gets killed by the pumpkin because of his loud nature. The survivors then try to reach the Corn Wagon of Clint, the only escape vehicle left. But, the latter, being under the influence of intoxicants, crashes the wagon and kills Barbara.

Somehow, Kira escapes with Trevor and Cody and makes it to a nearby farm. They find the killer pumpkin's offspring there, and Kira thinks instantly. Using Trevor and the baby pumpkin, she lures the vengeful creature into a crusher tractor and finally destroys it.

Why did we see a Killer Pumpkin in Carved?

At the beginning of the movie, a local reporter interviews Bill and Kevin. They eventually reveal that a year earlier, there was a dangerous accident in which a train carrying chemicals (for the company called Clinoxx) got derailed. Many people (including Kira's parents) died as a result.

Moreover, the Killer Pumpkin is a consequence of the mutation caused by the harmful chemicals. Clint eventually discovers the pumpkin in a field, appearing abnormally large and rough in texture, with root-like structures coming out of its eyes.

Was the Killer Pumpkin specifically going after anyone?

As seen in the movie Carved, the Killer Pumpkin goes after the carvers involved in the pumpkin carving competition. Clint takes it from the field first, so he is also on the list. Moreover, Kevin is a part of the contest, and Bill is the organizer, so they also end up dying.

Kira does not take part and leaves her spot for her brother Trevor, so she survives. The only contestant to survive is Maddie, who uses a herbicide against the Killer Pumpkin. Later, Barbara tragically dies in an accident, even though she was not a part of the carving contest.

The last sequence shows Clint's head, with his eyes and nose carved out like pumpkins and a tendril emerging from one of the eye sockets. It means that the Killer Pumpkin either left its evil spirit inside Clint's head or maybe an offspring somehow survived and hid there. So, the ending reportedly remains open for a sequel.
