A Minecraft Movie releases today, but it already had its premiere on March 30, 2025, in London. It was a sunny day, The Hollywood Reporter says. But the sun didn't appear to shine on the film as expected. Critic scores as of this writing indicate that it's an average movie with only 51% approval on Rotten Tomatoes.
Minecraft is considered one of the greatest video games of all time; the film isn't coming close to a title like that in the cinema segment of film adaptations of video games—that's highly likely. Even the ensemble cast, including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and more, wouldn't be of much help to A Minecraft Movie.
But people will still see it, especially the ones from the Minecraft community. Because Technoblade never dies. A Minecraft Movie has a tribute to the iconic YouTuber who took his last breath in June 2022, aged 23.
Torfi Frans Olafsson, senior creative director of entertainment and online at Microsoft and a co-producer of A Minecraft Movie, confirmed this in his recent interview with YouTuber Tommyinnit.
And then today on r/technoblade, a subreddit dedicated to him, somebody dropped footage of this tribute in A Minecraft Movie.
While the creators have given this heartfelt tribute to the late streamer, other YouTubers like Mumbo Jumbo, Valkyrae, and more appear in cameos too.
What happened to Technoblade?
Technoblade was absent from his YouTube channel for some time, and then, his channel gave the viewers some new content; he was telling a story about how he was feeling pain in his arm. He thought it could be because of some injury, as he has been playing video games since he was like five years old.
Just around the 3-minute mark in the video, he told the fans that he was diagnosed with cancer. It wasn't instantly confirmed ever after his demise what kind of cancer it was, but the Sarcoma Foundation of America, a cancer research organization for which he raised funds in the past, later said it was a type of stage 4 sarcoma.
As we discuss this, his channel holds over 18 million subscribers, and his father confirmed that future proceeds from the content will be used to support his siblings' education and the Sarcoma Foundation of America. That message reads,
"Thank you all for supporting my content over the years. If I had another 100 lives, I think I would choose to be Technoblade again, every single time, as those were the happiest years of my life."
As of this writing, Technoblade's channel has 1.8 billion views and counting.
Tributes to Technoblade other than A Minecraft Movie
It's not just A Minecraft Movie; following the demise of the content creator, the world was talking about him. Business magnate Elon Musk was among the others who gave the YouTuber a tribute.
Technoblade's demise was a fuel for sarcoma awareness and fundraising for the rare cancer. Richard Davidson, Sarcoma's UK boss, said that it turbo-charged the fundraising, and they raised over a million dollars after it, as the BBC mentioned last year in one of its stories.
According to a new report by the American Cancer Society, a nonprofit working to fight and eliminate cancer, it estimates that over 5,000 people will likely succumb to the disease.
