The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024 are set to take place on September 15. It will be quite a moment to mark since it is the first time Eugene Levy and Dan Levy host the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024. Not only that, they will officially be the very first father-son co-hosts of the coveted awards as well.
This milestone shows how connected the Levys are and how well they can work with one another, especially with the hit series Schitt's Creek. The show swept at the 2020 Emmys, snatching a handful of awards like Outstanding Comedy Series that put them on the map in the TV world.
Eugene Levy, the legendary actor from American Pie and SCTV, will be hosting the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024 along with his Emmy-winning son Dan. The latter has also found success as a writer, director, and producer.
Eugene and Dan Levy will be the historic 76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024 hosts
The power of the storytelling and humor brought Eugene and Dan Levy together for an amazing ride in showbiz, so to speak. Since the 1970s, Eugene has been a household name and has brought home four Emmys in the process.
He got a lot of applause for acting in Schitt's Creek, where he played Johnny Rose. He did both comic and touching acts quite well. Dan followed his dad to some extent in gaining fame in the same show as David Rose. Moreover, he won four Emmy awards as a writer and a director.
The Levys are all about keeping it in the family. Eugene's daughter, Sarah Levy, played Twyla Sands on Schitt's Creek, so they've teamed up for more than work. He loves any chance to collaborate with his kids. And it shows. It makes this hosting gig at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024 even more special as they try to bring a fun and welcoming vibe.
How are Eugene Levy and Dan Levy preparing for their Emmy hosting?
Eugene and Dan Levy will bank on their strengths in preparation for their maiden hosting, working closely with a team of writers. They don't seek tips from seasoned hosts, but stick to their comic instincts and writing/performing experience.
"We're working with some very funny writers who seem to be in sync with our sensibility," Eugene emphasized to the Los Angeles Times.
To deal with pre-show jitters before the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024, Eugene does yoga and meditation, while Dan is bent on not overthinking. As revealed to People magazine, Dan has also been trying something new by not stressing out or over-analyzing anything since he knows he does that.
The Levys bring much from what worked on Schitt's Creek to their hosting style for the Emmys. That show clicked: such chemistry and comic timing. That vibe is what they want to bring with them onto the stage at the Emmys. They are all about fun, lightness, and no sharp roasting, as is sometimes common in award shows.
"We hope to kick it off in a way that's kind of energized, makes people feel good, and then we launch into the show," Eugene explained.
Dan added,
"It's celebratory... I don't think we have it in our DNA to like, scorched Earth this Emmys and just throw everybody under the bus."
At one point, Eugene jokingly said they've got "eleven" surprises lined up for the show, which Dan agreed to with the same energy. This light-hearted banter will engage the audience and bring out their family interaction through the night.
Cris Abrego, the Television Academy Chair, also spoke with NBC about the historic 76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024 hosting gig of the Levys:
"We are excited to bring two generations of comedic brilliance to the Emmy stage as our hosts."
