1) The deception began in 2009
Back in 2009, Facebook and other forms of social media were still nascent, and people were trying their best to make new friends and relationships online. Kirat Assi was twenty-nine years old and a radio announcer on a Punjabi station. She was contacted by her cousin, Simran Bhogal's ex-boyfriend JJ, who wished to consult her on ways to have Simran back in his life.
Following a brief period of talking to each other online, Kirat was told by Simran that JJ had succumbed to an allergic reaction and passed over. Simran asked her to contact Bobby, a handsome cardiologist based in Kenya, and JJ's brother to offer her condolences.
Over time, Bobby and Kirat develop a relationship that eventually ends in romance despite never seeing each other in person.
2) Bobby claimed he was in a witness protection program
Although they were constantly in touch and speaking online, Bobby and Kirat had never met in person throughout their relationship. Whenever Kirat wanted to meet, Bobby would present one excuse or the other. Bobby once claimed he was in a witness protection program in New York after he was shot at in Kenya. He had also stated that he was suffering from life-threatening diseases that didn't allow him to leave the hospital.
3) Bobby manipulated Kirat Assi
Kirat confesses in Sweet Bobby: My Catfishing Nightmare that Bobby emotionally manipulated her when they were together. In an interview with the Guardian, Kirat remarked:
"Bobby would be like, ‘Where are you? Why aren’t you at home? Why aren’t you in your room?’ I didn’t understand why I was sitting at home if he wasn’t here. It was not like me at all."
4) The real Bobby Jandu lived in Brighton
With time, Kirat sensed that something was off and enlisted the help of a private detective to trace Bobby's location. The search for Bobby ended in Brighton, UK. Kirat ultimately went to the house to find the real Bobby living there with his wife and children.
5) The culprit was Simran Bhogal
Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare further discloses the real person behind the catfishing. After Kirat confronted the real Bobby, her cousin Simran Bhogal confessed to being responsible for the entire deception, which included sixty different false personalities at one point. When Kirat tried to report Bhogal, the police told her that she was not the victim, but the real Bobby was the real victim.
