The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) began with Iron Man in 2008, and since then, it has launched an era-defining pop culture fandom that spawned internet memes, cinematic spin-offs, and numerous OTT series.

Marvel movies brought some of our favorite superheroes to life on screen with a unique blend of action, engaging storytelling, and memorable character arcs. From the heartbreak of Tony Stark’s final snap to the amusement of the portal scene in Endgame, Marvel left a lasting mark. Millions of fans grew up with these mighty heroes and superhuman characters. The clarion call of 'Avengers assemble', Tony Stark's suit-up dance, or the love story of Vision-Wanda are a few from the long list of adorable MCU moments.
Even though the franchise was massively successful during its earlier phases, something shifted after Endgame madness. The movies were popular for the iconic moments, but that's not all. At times, they went viral for all the wrong reasons. Let us take a look
Here are 10 Marvel moments that almost broke the internet, for all the wrong reasons.
1. Shang-Chi and Katy's dinner talk moment:

Despite the movie offering us action, style, and remarkable kung-fu sequences, a particularly clunky scene from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) draws attention. The dinner scene does not appear as organically integrated, rather, it appears as a sudden interruption.
Shang-Chi and Katy try to talk and keep up a lighthearted atmosphere with their friends, but you get only a long description of Shang-Chi's past. This scene slows down the pace without adding depth or dimension to the story.
2. CGI factor in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
Marvel's She-Hulk: Attorney at Law came out in 2022. When the trailer dropped, fans were shocked to see the bizarre CG used in the film. It looked plasticky and funny to some extent. The CG scenes went for a touch-up later, but even so, the She-Hulk animation was off-putting to many fans.
Right after Endgame's sky-high standards, fans were disappointed to see the sudden drop in MCU prowess.
3. The "Twerking Scene" from She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
The twerk scene featuring Megan Thee Stallion just went on to become one of the widely spawned meme materials from the MCU universe.
She-Hulk and Megan Thee Stallion join hands in the post-credit scene. While fans expected this team-up to be something with MCU magic, all they got was a work sequence.
While the moment was meant to be fun and light-hearted, it left a strange note for fans craving a stronger take on legal procedure or the female superhero. Critics and fans on social media found it cringeworthy and bizarre.
4. Deciding the code-name: The Marvels
One of the most widely clichéd scenes from the superhero universe is when a superhero decides upon a code name. If we recall Peter Parker's development as Spider-Man, we will note that it was a slow, well-picturized scene. But coming to 2023's The Marvels, this scene did not sit right.
We got some random names like 'Nova', 'Supernova', 'Dr. Marvel's and whatnot. As the series ended, this particular moment became one of the most cringeworthy scenes from the MCU.
5. Taskmaster’s Identity Reveal in Black Widow
In MCU comics, the supervillain Taskmaster was an intimidating presence and a formidable villain. His superpowers were photographic reflexes and a snarky personality.
In Black Widow, Marvel somehow lost hold of this character. They made it to be Dreykov’s brainwashed daughter. It wasn't the gender swap that bothered most fans—it was the depth, motivations, and personality that went missing overall in the character.
6. Bad CGI from The Eternals
Even with a star-studded cast and lofty CGI moments, this film did not quite meet fan expectations. One of the reasons why this happened can be traced back to the storytelling and lack of character depth. But visually, the first thing that looks off-putting is the excessive use of bland CGI scenes.
7. Nick Fury losing his eye to an alien
One we think of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one of the characters we all look up to is Nick Fury. Played by Samuel L Jackson, this character tied the team together for the initial movies, starting from Iron Man to The Avengers. Naturally, when a character is this influential, fans expect to see a good backstory as to how he lost his eye.
But getting past that black eye-patch of Nick Fury, fans found that the backstory was just as patched up. While everyone expected a highly tense combat to be the reason, Fury loses his eye to a cat alien.
8. The poor CGI of Thor: Love and Thunder
The 2022 installment of Thor's MCU arc was a major letdown. Axl (Heimdall's son) appears with a floating head in one of the scenes. This CGI not only looks visibly fake, but also calls into question the hefty budget that went into making this movie. While fans expected some stunning VFX and at least believable CGI, a floating head appeared.
9. The final battle of the Vibranium mines in Black Panther
Chadwick Boseman played the character of Black Panther, and he did a marvellous job at pulling off the task. Fans were excited to see where this character arc leads. But eventually, the final battle was a letdown. The Battle in the Vibraniun mine was the final showdown between Black Panther and the Villain. But this sequence was laced with CGI, making the climax off-putting.
10. Portrayal of MODOK in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
When MODOK—one of Marvel’s most weird-looking comic villains—appeared on the MCU screen, it was jarring to many comic lovers to see a giant floating face and almost no characteristic depth.
The design was clunky and barely made for a memorable experience. The humor tried to settle things, but the CGI factor ruined the effort. Naturally, what ensued from this was a storm of memes on social media.
Overall, some MCU films were a total hit, but missed the mark due to poor CGI, badly written character arcs, or just too much change in the original portrayal of characters or backstories from Marvel comics. In the age of social media, these goof-ups did not go unnoticed, and they became viral for all the wrong reasons.
