What Happened on Days of our Lives

In a back alley, Kevin urgently tried to reach Philip again, to no avail. After Kevin saw an incoming phone call from Dr. Russell, his agitation increased. He left a message for Philip demanding Philip relieve him of the Versavix vials.
At the Brady Pub, Alex met with Kate to make a pitch about an “exciting” project. He presented her with the manuscript of Stephanie’s romance novel. Alex told Kate the author wanted to remain anonymous because of the “racy” content. When Kate thumbed through a few pages, she concurred the writing was “racy.” Alex argued the book was also well-written and had a definite market.
Since Kate had a track record of success with Titan Publishing, Alex had wanted her to evaluate and edit the book. Kate wondered what was in it for her. Alex planned to pay Kate handsomely. Better yet, he wanted to relaunch Titan’s publishing division, with Kate at the helm. Kate said she’d think it over.
Kate had concerns that the anonymous author was taking credit for someone else’s work, as Jack Deveraux had once done to Kate herself. Alex assured Kate the author was the real deal. Both Kate and Alex agreed that “sex sells.” Kate promised she’d leave the manuscript in her room and read it later. She then left for a breakfast meeting with Philip.
At Stephanie’s apartment, Jada and Stephanie sat down to catch up. Jada received a call from Shawm informing her that he felt sick and wouldn’t be in for work. After the call, Jada expressed gratitude to Stephanie for her friendship, and Stephanie returned the sentiment. During the talk, Stephanie noticed her manuscript was missing from her desk. Stephanie claimed she was looking for a work-related document, and Jada offered to help her find it.
Stephanie had a better idea: they’d go out for breakfast. Jada suggested they visit Sweet Bits to support Chanel, who had been facing social media backlash following Sarah’s allergic reaction.
In Horton Town Square, Shawn expressed his guilt for lying to Jada about his real plans for the day. Steve comforted him as Shawn stressed the urgency of finding the missing Versavix drug. Steve had some good news for Shawn: John had been located and was expected home that night. Shawn was happy for John’s family, and he wanted the same miracle for his family. He told Steve that he believed an old high school friend who was working at Dr. Russell’s lab had stolen the drug.
Shawn didn’t understand Kevin’s motives, so Steve suggested Shawn give his old friend a call. Shawn did just that and immediately took note of Kevin’s agitation. Shawn hinted that he knew about the Versavix theft and compelled Kevin to let him help. He requested Kevin meet him in the square. As Steve and Shawn awaited Kevin’s arrival, Stephanie and Jada approached, forcing the supposedly sick Shawn to make up an excuse about going out for a prescription.
Once the women said their goodbyes, Steve indicated that Jada hadn’t bought the story. Shawn intended to tell her the truth when things were settled. Just then a harried Kevin arrived, and the scientist was unnerved to see Steve. Shawn pledged that both Steve and he could help Kevin, provided Kevin told them everything. Shawn tried to get Kevin to trust him by confessing that Steve and he had broken into the lab in order to secure the treatment for Shawn’s dad, Bo.
In return, Kevin filled Shawn and Steve in on his plot with Philip. Kevin had made a quick getaway and had absconded with all the vials after he’d heard someone else at the lab. He’d panicked again after failing to contact Philip. Shawn thought it strange that Philip hadn’t met with Kevin, as intended. He offered to take the drug from Kevin, get one vial for Bo, and then return the rest to the lab -- without exposing Kevin.
Kevin was grateful for the help, but he explained that he’d already handed the drug over to his roommate, who also worked in the vicinity of the lab and could possibly return the vials undetected. Panic again ensued, however, when Kevin couldn’t reach his roommate either. Shawn and Steve remained determined to locate Bo’s only salvation.
Across the square, Jada observed Steve, Shawn, and Kevin’s interaction with suspicion. She was soon called away for work. Alex had come on the scene to replace Jada as Stephanie’s breakfast date. As the couple grabbed a table, Stephanie mentioned her missing manuscript. Alex pulled it from his bag and said he’d made a copy of it to give his editor friend.
Before Alex could update Stephanie on his meeting with Kate, Stephanie blurted out that she didn’t want the novel published after all. Stephanie was still afraid that even if she used a pen name, somehow she would be outed as the author. If that happened, her clients wouldn’t take her seriously anymore. Alex protested but eventually promised he would let the idea go.
At the Salem Inn, a bloodied Philip crawled across his hotel room floor. Xander kicked him repeatedly as Philip coughed up more blood. With each kick, Xander raged at Philip for his various betrayals. Philip pleaded while Xander berated him and called him a “pathetic loser” who had shamed their father and destroyed the family. Xander spat that Victor had sent Philip away because he couldn’t stand to look at Philip, just like Xander.
Xander mused who else Philip might have pulled into his web of lies. As Xander stepped over a wheezing Philip to leave, Philip stopped his brother with one word: “Sarah.” Xander rushed back and commanded Philip to tell him why he had invoked Sarah’s name. “Sarah…knew,” Philip managed before passing out. Xander shook him, demanding more information.
In a renewed rage, Xander threw Philip on the bed and shouted at him to wake up. He took Philip’s pulse, got panicked, and left in a hurry…just as Kate arrived. When she pushed the partially ajar door fully open, she took in the sight of a beaten Philip sprawled on the bed. “Oh, God, no!” she cried.
At the Kiriakis mansion, Sarah and Maggie discussed the theft of the missing drug and the fight over Versavix. Sarah hoped that Xander wasn’t getting into trouble trying to track down the drug. Her worry increased when she attempted in vain to call Xander. Sarah lamented not being able to take the trip with Xander, and she fretted about what might happen if he discovered her betrayal.
Sarah considered herself a hypocrite for talking about Xander’s dishonesty when she had been keeping a massive secret. She wanted to go to work to distract herself. Maggie turned to Victor’s portrait and commented that Xander was acting just like his father would.
Later, Xander came home and made a beeline for a drink. He had previously run into Alex in the square and abruptly departed. When Maggie joined Xander, she spotted blood on his hands. Xander attributed it to an accidental injury he’d gotten.
Maggie informed Xander that Sarah had wanted to talk with him. With a menacing scowl, Xander indicated he had some questions for Sarah, too.
At the hospital, Sarah responded to an incoming patient in the ER. She visibly reacted when she saw Philip on the gurney and instructed the staff to take him into a room. A frantic Kate waited outside.
Jada soon arrived and questioned Kate, who pointed the finger at Xander. Jada inquired why Xander would attack Philip. Kate remained vague and attributed the possible attack to Xander’s displeasure at sharing his empire with Philip.
Inside Philip’s room, Sarah ordered tests to evaluate the severity of Philip’s internal bleeding and organ injuries. She prayed that Xander had no involvement in the assault.
Later, Sarah went outside the room and gave Kate and Jada an update on Philip’s condition: he was critical but in stable condition. Someone had beaten Philip “within an inch of his life.” Jada asked Sarah about Xander’s whereabouts. The commissioner wanted to question Xander for the near-deadly attack on his brother.
