Hold onto your hats, Days of our Lives fans. The NBC soap's head writer, Ron Carlivati, says a whole lot of drama is blowing into Salem this fall.
There's never a dull moment in Days of our Lives' Salem, and this autumn will be no exception. Head writer Ron Carlivati teases that things are about to get crazy (scratch that: crazier) in the weeks to come, starting with the show's current custody battle.
"It's Sami's [Alison Sweeney] worst nightmare that Nicole [Arianne Zucker] could raise her grandson," Carlivati teases. "But just when it looks like [things are] going badly for her, she pulls a rabbit out of her hat and calls a surprise witness to the stand that turns the whole proceedings upside down. By unleashing this witness upon Salem, it will cause a lot of collateral damage for people who are in Sami's life."
Speaking of unpredictable happenings, John's (Drake Hogestyn) recent medical crisis will cause him to experience mood swings and changes in personality. Says Carlivati, "In this instance, you see that John's emotions are going to be very close to the surface. It's something he and Marlena [Deidre Hall] will have to weather together. But some of his unintended outbursts may just have some bigger consequences for them."

Marci Miller recently stepped back into the role of Abigail, and Carlivati says that through her, viewers will see the truth about Gwen (Emily O'Brien) finally come to light.
"Gwen immediately sets about trying to befriend Abigail and help with the children and becomes their nanny," the writer says. "Besides just being Jake's [Brandon Barash] girlfriend, Gwen has reasons of her own for wanting to infiltrate the DiMera mansion. Her agenda will slowly unfold throughout the fall and you will see what Gwen is really up to."
Meanwhile, Carlivati previews that a major story is coming along with the return of Steve's son, Tripp (Lucas Adams). "Tripp bumps into somebody he knew when he was away and it will launch him into a story that will be a bigger story and has repercussions all over Salem."
