Is DAYS' Sonny headed toward an addiction storyline?

Days of our Lives' Sonny Kiriakis is a sweet and lovable guy, but is it time for him to sink to the fiery pits of hell? Find out what his portrayer, Freddie Smith, thinks.

There's only so much one human being can withstand before he or she reaches a breaking point, and Days of our Lives' Sonny Kiriakis could be close to that point. The poor guy has endured so much drama over the years, including the recent near-death of his beloved Will (Chandler Massey) -- for the second time -- that he may be on the brink of a breakdown.

"To lose someone and to have the miracle of them coming back into your life... [followed by] the fear of 'How could this happen again?' is more than devastating," the actor told Soaps In Depth. "Sonny definitely went through the wringer with that."

Not to mention the hell that Sonny had gone through prior, what with having been fired, blackmailed, widowed, stabbed, and stranded on an island. It would be enough to drive anyone mad, or -- if Smith had his wish -- drive his alter ego to addiction.

"[I'd love to see him develop] a drug or alcohol problem," the actor enthuses. "Something to change him from the amazing, positive, successful, loving guy into someone who makes bad decisions."

The fun in that, as he points out, would be "watching him climb back out to be the person everyone loved... I think that would be a really cool storyline."

Time will tell whether or not the powers that be will drag Sonny through that kind of wringer, but as with all things soap opera, there's sure to be plenty of drama ahead!
