Summer Lovin': Super Couples

Summer Lovin': Super Couples

Our special Two Scoops Summer Series, Summer Lovin' concludes with our fourth installment: The top 15 super couples in Days of our Lives history.

Ah, love! It is the message. It lifts us up where we belong. It takes our breath away. It, well, you get the point. It's important, and really, it's what makes the soap world spin. And what better way to end the Summer Lovin' series than with a look back at some of Salem's epic love stories for the ages. They're timeless. They're romantic. They're often quite messy. Yet in the end, love is what made us tune in to watch these splendid couples all the days of our lives. Please note, we've selected "Super Couples" in lieu of "supercouples." Not all of our selections or "Honorable Mentions" may have reached the '80s defined supercouple status, but to us, they were simply super anyway!

On (and off) screen, these two had chemistry to spare. Doug and Julie had a deep love that prevailed over everything that was thrown their way, and that was a lot. And, well, they were on the cover of TIME magazine. That pretty much explains how super they were.

Awww, your boyfriend was nice enough to run that presentation that you forgot up to you at work? That's nice. Yeah, her boyfriend saved her from the devil.

This couple was so popular that they rewrote their history from "rebel and the young girl in love" to "sandbox playmates when they were younger." Yup, one great love story just wasn't enough for them. And perhaps the best thing about this couple was the way they were professional partners, too. The Detectives Brady were wonderful to watch together.

From the first towel-clad moment that they met, we knew that these two had something special. We enjoyed the rich storylines that came from the horrible things they did to each other. And then we were thrilled when the show finally got over itself and paired these two to realize the glorious evil they could accomplish together. Bring on the affairs, murder trials, hits, whatever! We'll still root for this duo!

Mickey and Maggie's love story was what soaps are made of. She saved him from a dark future after he mentally broke down. He encouraged her to fight for the dance they would someday share (and he even bought her shoes, which is your cue to swoon, ladies). Though their lives were never exactly dull, they remained together and proved that love conquers all.

This is a tale as old as time -- beauty and the beast. Just don't call Kayla a beast around Patch, of course. We kid. We kid. Kayla was the sweet girl next door with a heart of gold. Steve was a troubled soul with the physical, emotional, and psychological scars to prove it. And then the one-eyed man let love lead the way and accepted Kayla into his life. It was a beautiful love story told through all the romance and adventure soaps in the '80s were known for.

By all rights, these two shouldn't have made it. They had a lot to deal with, mostly because Lexie had a wandering eye and questionable DiMera roots. Still, they overcame all their obstacles, which solidified them into one of Salem's most classy, stable couples.

If you flash back to the early '80s, Roman and Marlena were the "it" couple. She was a respected shrink. He was the tough cop in town with swagger to spare. And then a serial killer took Salem hostage, and it turned into a Bodyguard type love affair with Roman protecting Marlena and falling in love in the process. Of course, Deidra Hall and Wayne Northrop's sizzling chemistry didn't hurt, either. Sadly, Roman and Marlena parted ways -- no thanks in part due to Stefano -- but they still remain close friends and confidants and that, well, that is super.

They may be the newest couple on this list, but "Wilson" has the "super" factor. They're supportive and kind to one another, plus they do something many, many, many soap couples don't do -- they simply communicate. If they have a problem, they address it head-on and then move on (and always finish their arguments with a kiss). Their maturity in that aspect puts them decades above a lot of their supercouple peers.

This love story had its share of ups and downs. And Jack was dead a lot of the time. But let's not dwell on that. The best part of Jack and Jennifer was their charm. They were equal parts deep drama and comedy, which proved to be a perfect paring for these two wacky beloved Salemites.

These two came from completely different sides of the tracks. Justin was a silver spooned socialite from a wealthy family. Adrienne was a poor gal with a tragic past. Yet their differences eventually made them stronger, and they flourished to create a beautiful lasting relationship and strong family.

You know what typically happens to soap vets when they've reached a "certain age?" Not much, really, and that is horribly sad. But that didn't happen for two of Salem's most beloved seniors. It was a slow burn when widow, Maggie, began seeing cantankerous, witty, (sort-of) ex-mobster Victor in a different light. And let's be honest here, it was hard not to think "Mickey and Maggie" for a long time, but the writers took their time. They respected Mickey's memory as well as Maggie's grief. It wasn't a rush to get her and Victor together. It was a mutual respect turned into a genuine love, which proved to be "magic" for both longtime and newer viewers alike.

These two pretty much made DAYS Must-See TV for a long time. It was a twisted tale filled with heartache and pain, yet eventually these two worked out their differences. We guess love really does conquer all, but we just didn't know it could get that messy beforehand!

When you break it down, Shane was Salem's answer to 007. He was a suave, sophisticated, international man of mystery. Kimberly, however, wasn't exactly a "Bond girl." In fact, she was a mentally unstable hot mess due to a string of horrible events from her past. But then they met, and love blossomed between these two. Of course, the road to supercoupledom wasn't easy for them, but they eventually made it for a while. Sadly, they did divorce, and Kim left Salem to start a new life with a new husband, but that's the thing about supercouple love -- it never ends. Eventually, Shane and Kimberly reunited and worked through their issues. Today, they are living happily ever after in L.A. Well, as "happily ever after" as soap couples can who have Theresa and Eve as kids!

While we didn't get to see their courtship (though we're sure it was epic, since Tom had that classy thing down) we did get to see perhaps the most romantic part of a relationship -- sticking by each other as you navigate the perils of raising rambunctious children and grandchildren who put the "ache" in headache.

Truth be told, we could have made a much longer list and we've added several "Honorable Mentions" below, but favorite couples are special because everyone has their own list of love stories they just can't get enough of. Supercouple Parents: Bo Brady and Hope Brady

Considering the demon spawn Ciara is turning out to be, Shawn gets the Bope spot on this list. There's really no contest. We watched him grown from plucky little Shawn-D/"Sailor Man" to moody teen Shawn to one half of give-me-my-daughter-back Shelle. And then he wanted to follow in his parents' footsteps to become a cop but sailed around the world instead, which meant he still kind of did!
