The Bold and the Beautiful Performer of the Week: Katherine Kelly Lang’s Masterclass in Sisterly Venom

Katie’s attempt to prove herself to her sisters, Donna and Brooke, went entirely off the rails over the latest week of The Bold and the Beautiful. After officially departing from Forrester Creations to embark on her own fashion endeavor, the first course of business was to unveil the name of her fledgling company. However, after revealing the name to be ‘Logan,’ sparks flew between Katie and big sister, Brooke. To Brooke, Katie's choice of brand name felt like a complete slap in the face, as if her little sister used her name recognition to jumpstart her business.

Although at first it came across more as Brooke questioning Katie's audacity to sponge off her name, things quickly took a personal turn. Katie and Brooke's war of words escalated into a full-fledged retrieval of the past, digging up skeletons long thought to be buried. When the topic turned to Brooke’s past with Katie’s new husband, Bill, the talents of Katherine Kelly Lang truly reared themselves. Embracing the mantle of the bitter big sister earned the legendary actress this week's performance of the week honors.

As one of two original actors left on the series, Lang has seen and done pretty much everything there is to do. After over three decades as the infamous Brooke Logan, it's easy to forget how talented she truly is. Sometimes she's at the forefront of the show's signature storyline, and other times she's relegated to supporting character. However, this is the type of plot where she thrives, and when Brooke is allowed to be Brooke, her scenes are among the most compelling soap has to offer.

What made Lang’s performance a masterpiece was how she gave viewers a Brooke rooted in such conviction. Brooke meant every word of venom that she spewed toward Katie. It was easy to believe that Brooke was repulsed by Katie’s choice to brand her company off of the Logan name. Whether she was right or wrong was irrelevant because Lang’s look of bewilderment at Katie’s nerve to enter the fashion industry riding her coattails. It didn’t matter if Katie’s intentions were pure or if Brooke was right and they were malicious. At that moment, the only thing that mattered in the world was Brooke’s towering presence over a sister daring to carve her own path.

Lang and Heather Tom are two soap opera veterans, and their ability to command a scene was on full display once the fireworks sparked about Brooke and Bill’s twisted past. Katie put Brooke on trial for every indiscretion or misdeed that was pushed aside to make the latter’s life easier. Lang made the viewer believe that Brooke genuinely didn’t think she did anything wrong and that she was the only victim in it all. That is true talent, and making the audience feel is key to making a storyline work.

What's next for Brooke Logan?

Brooke isn’t going to sit back and let Katie win. Despite the irrefutable fact that Katie (and Spencer) secured the trademark for the Logan name, Brooke and Ridge are undoubtedly going to do whatever they can to douse her dreams. Brooke truly believes that she is the only member of her family deserving of using the Logan name in the fashion sphere. Nobody else has the right to do anything unless she deems it necessary. As sad as it may be, this extends to Katie as well. If things go according to plan, and Katie brings Deke in as a designer, it’s only going to increase the family tension.

Brooke and Katie have been at odds in the past, but evidently, the resolution wasn’t genuine. All was not forgiven or forgotten, and to Katie, this is another example of Brooke trying to snatch away anything good that happens in her life. However, for Brooke, this is a woman desperate to cling to relevance and prove herself as the number one Logan sister and one of the pillars of the fashion industry. The war is one, and if Katie can get out of her own head, she could prove herself as a genuine threat. On the other hand, if Katie lets Brooke’s doubt creep too far into her head, the eldest Logan sister will walk away with the last laugh.
